A breath alcohol tester gives a reliable reading only when it is used the right way. Small mistakes, like testing right after a drink or not blowing long enough, can give a wrong result. Follow these steps every time.
Before you test
- Wait at least 15–20 minutes after drinking, eating, smoking or using mouthwash. Alcohol left in the mouth can give a falsely high reading.
- Use the tester at normal room temperature. Very hot or cold places can affect the sensor.
- Make sure the battery is charged and the mouthpiece is clean and fitted properly.
Step-by-step testing
- Switch on the tester and wait for the warm-up or “ready” signal.
- Take a normal deep breath.
- Blow steadily into the mouthpiece (or towards the sensor for non-contact models) for the time shown in the manual, usually about 4–5 seconds.
- Stop when the tester beeps or shows the result.
- Read the result on the display and note it down, or print it if your tester has a printer.
- Wait for the tester to clear before the next person tests.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Blowing too softly or for too short a time.
- Testing immediately after a drink.
- Sharing one mouthpiece between people. Use a new mouthpiece for each person, or a non-contact alcohol tester.
- Keeping the tester in a hot car or a dusty place.
How often should you calibrate?
Every sensor slowly drifts with use. As a simple rule, get your tester checked and calibrated as per the manual, or sooner if you test many people every day. Fuel cell testers such as the SIMMANS S-75 stay accurate longer between calibrations than semiconductor testers.
